A long time ago in a dorm far, far away... ...some students and administrators at St. Lawrence University decided to make better use of the University's housing and to give students an alternative living arrangement to dorm rooms or greek houses. The idea of the theme cottage evolved. Groups of like-minded individuals, banded together by a theme or common interest, developed proposals, and were granted one of SLU's designated residential style houses. The idea caught fire and soon the University ran out of surplus property. As a result Hospice Outreach and Education now resides in the suites. There are now twelve theme cottages on campus that compete each year for nine houses. The remainder reside in the suites or a floor of a dorm. The list of theme organizations wanting housing grows every year. Hospice Outreach and Education, one of the earliest of the theme organizations, has resided at 1 University Street, 72 Park Street, 52 Park Street, and now Jencks Hall.
