So what do we do?

           Good question. We're glad you asked. Members of the Hospice Suite must be certified as Hospice volunteers. Training includes an intensive 20 hours of training which prepares you for the Hospice experience, and a monthly meeting with the Volunteer Coordinator of the local office. Members of Hospice at SLU make home and/or nursing home visits as often as they can, usually once or twice a week. These visits last an average of two hours. Volunteers read to patients, talk to them, prepare meals, or sometimes just hold their hands. These visits provide support for the patient and respite for the caregivers. Hospice members also attend weekly meetings here at the suite and help out in campus-centered organization activities. Hospice of SLU is community-centered and sometimes bringing our cause to campus is difficult, but we do our best. In the past, we have participated in SLU's Wellness Fair, held an Easter basket sale, and brought speakers to campus. So basically, we're a group of 15-20 St. Lawrence University students who volunteer for Hospice of St. Lawerence Valley.
